Former Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi has expressed his excitement for the future of the Club, citing the rise of the next generation of Rabbitohs coming through the Club as a catalyst for change in 2018.
Asotasi came at a pivotal time for the Club back in 2007, which was the first time the Rabbitohs had made the finals for 18 years, and was at the forefront of change in the Clubs’ fortunes.
The former New Zealand representative spoke of the positive energy around the Club, particularly with the uprising of new talent during the shoot of the 2018 Membership video at ANZ Stadium.
“Yeah it’s exciting, it’s good to be back at ANZ especially in the dressing room before some familiar faces plus some new faces that I’ve seen throughout the year. They’ve done a great job for the Club and it’s a good experience at the moment,” Asotasi said.
“All these young guys, they look big these days. I don’t know, all this sports science stuff must be working. It’s good to see Tyrell (Fuimaono) and Angus Crichton, Cameron Murray, they’ve been outstanding for the Club.
“You can see that the Club has a future, a lot of players have left throughout the last couple of years so it’s good to see that there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel.”
Having finished his playing career after the 2013 season, Asotasi has continued his work within rugby league in an ambassadorial role with the NRL and the Rabbitohs, citing his opportunity to give back to the game.
“I’m still doing a lot of great work within the rugby league circles, definitely with South Sydney and also doing a lot of Ambassador roles for the NRL at Souths. I’m enjoying it, it keeps me in the loop with the game and just to be also be around some old faces plus some young guys and to preach and spread the word of the great game of rugby league.
“That’s one thing I have enjoyed. Rugby league has given me a lot throughout my career and it feels right for me to give back and share a bit of my experience throughout my time.”
Asotasi had one final message for Rabbitohs Members and fans that are eagerly awaiting season 2018.
“Get ready. We’re looking forward to a great year next year, there’s been a lot of new changes from staff to players but our future looks bright.
“You can only see what South Sydney have done this year in regards to all their rookies that have come through and been blooded so they’re going to be a year smarter and a lot better for the 2018 season.”
