Captain of the 1999 team before South Sydney’s two year exile from the NRL, Sean Terence Garlick was born on 6 August 1969.
A La Perouse junior, he represented NSW Primary Schools in 1981, went to Matraville High School and was graded by Souths in 1988 as a hooker.
In his younger days he had roles in various television shows such as 'Fortress' (1986), 'Seven’s Home and Away' (1991) and 'Rescue: Special Ops' (2010). He also performed alongside Nicole Kidman in 'Watch The Shadows Dance' (1987).
Unlike footballers of today, Sean then worked full-time as a NSW Policeman in various sections of the Police throughout a 13-year career, whilst playing first grade for both the Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters.
Known for playing above his weight, he was identified by coaches and fellow players as a natural leader, and captained both foundation clubs. When he left Souths in 1994 for the Roosters, coach Phil Gould preferred him as captain over Brad Fittler.
Garlick represented South Sydney Rabbitohs from 1988-93 before shifting "to the dark side", as he said, returning home in 1998-99. He played 150 grade games for Souths including 97 in first grade, scoring 14 tries.
For Easts he appeared in 64 first grade games scoring 3 tries. When Souths were excluded from the NRL at the end of 199 he was a leading figure in the Club’s efforts to return to the elite level of the game. When South Sydney returned to the NRL in 2002 he was made the Football Club Manager, and served on the Board Of Directors in 2001 at the height of the fightback.
During his playing days Sean became a regular face on Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’, a role he continued after retiring. He spent 5 years as a commentator for Optus Vision and Fox Sports, as well as guest appearances on Channel Seven’s Footy Grandstand and Radio 2GB.
Sean always saw himself as being involved in Rugby League but things changed quickly when he and his brother Nathan founded Garlos’ Pies in 2001. Today the family-owned business at Kingsgrove in south-west Sydney has grown beyond their belief.
With Mario Fenech, he formed the Souths Sydney Players’ Association in 2008, known as the 'R-Ageing Rabbits' and is chair of its committee, which plan and co-ordinate player re-unions. Garlos Pies is a current club sponsor, and at home games Sean is the MC in the Churchill Club sponsors’ room. He is also on the NRL judiciary panel.
Sean Garlick was awarded Life Membership of SSDRL in 2011, and he and wife Samantha have three sons, Jackson, Bronson and Campbell. Bronson is currently in the Rabbitohs Canterbury Cup squad.
