From Wagga Wagga to Redfern, get to know new Souths front rower Mark Nicholls.
Background
Country boy Mark Nicholls started in Wagga Wagga with Leeton Raiders and Gungahlin Bulls, before signing on with the Canberra Raiders in 2008.
Career
Nicholls was a part of the Canberra Raiders inaugural under 20s squad that finished 2008 as Premiers. Two years later, Nicholls' efforts were rewarded with a place in the Junior Kangaroos squad.
Nicholls made his long awaited debut in Round 17 2012 against the St. George Illawarra Dragons, coming off the bench as an interchange prop. In 2016, he signed on with the Melbourne Storm for two seasons, where he was a valued member of their Telstra Premiership squad.
Style
Tipping the scales at 104kg and standing at 194cm, Nicholls is an asset to any squad. Soon to turn 28 years old, Nicholls is considered a late bloomer whose attitude and commitment is second to none.
His high work will be invaluable to the side as the front row stocks get rotated throughout the full 80 minutes.
Mark Nicholls“I want to play consistent NRL. Look to cement my spot and start a game. I’ll just keep working hard at training, listen to the coaches, improve and be a player that the boys want to play with.”
How he fits into the squad
Nicholls brings a wealth of rugby league experience which will hold him in good stead as he looks to nail a regular spot in 2018. His preferred position is prop, but he is able to switch to the back row if needed.
General Manager of Football Shane Richardson“Mark Nicholls is a big bodied front rower from the Melbourne Storm system. He played 10 games last year. He ran third in our fitness tests in the off season so aerobically he’s very fit and strong so he will be pushing for a spot in first grade.”
