With Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess cleared of serious neck and spinal injuries this morning (Monday) skipper, Greg Inglis, says that the lock-forward was – and is – in the best hands possible.
Attacking the line early in the second half of yesterday’s game against the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG, Burgess stayed down after burrowing his head into a tackle awkwardly – a moment that resulted in the forward being medi-cabbed from the field.
“I spoke to him this morning as well and he was upbeat which is all good to hear,” said Inglis.
“I’m pretty sure they’ll keep him in hospital the next few days and make sure he’ll actually be fine to come out. I was a bit scared to start with, but he’s in the best hands possible.
“To see any player go down like that, laying there motionless – it’s pretty hard. But I knew Sammy was in the best capable hands he could be out on the field at that point.

“First thing we spoke about when we got in the sheds was making sure that Sam was alright after Madge gave his speech.”
Asked about his last-minute attempt at field-goal, Inglis saw the humour in what he described as a rare brain-snap.
With the Rabbitohs down 8-6, the skipper admitted to thinking the scores were locked up. Inglis had in fact earlier urged playmaker Luke Keary to ‘have a shot’ before full-time.
“A bit of a brain-snap – I don’t know what was going on,” laughed Inglis.
“I said to Keary ‘have a shot’ and he looked at me going ‘what are you talking about?’
“Maybe I should’ve taken more notice of what the score-line was. It’s just one of those things that I can sit back and have a good laugh at now.”
