Rabbitohs winger, Alex Johnston, always knew he was Indigenous, and is proud of it.
Like so many of his fellow Indigenous Rabbitohs, Johnston was taught about his heritage and culture by family, including his grandmother – a proud Saibai lady.
“Growing up, I always knew I was Indigenous,” said Johnston.
“My Nan is a very proud Saibai lady and she pretty much instilled that within us – the pride of being Indigenous.
“I remember as a kid just walking around (and) if someone asked you ‘who are you?’ the first thing I’d say is ‘I’m Indigenous’.
“Family is a big part of my life – it’s something that’s always connected with me.”
In addition to having his hand-print on the Club’s 2016 Indigenous jersey, Johnston is also proud to have his Totem featured as well – a feature that Johnston admits spurred him into doing some more research into his heritage.
“I’ve got my Totem on there as well,” Johnston enthused.
“It’s the Crocodile, from the Crocodile Clan of Saibai Island – that’s where my people are from.
“I only figured that out about a month ago really – I did a bit of research.
“I’m very proud of it and it’ll be definitely a lot of inspiration for me when I’m playing.”
The jersey that will be worn by the Rabbitohs tonight against St George Illawarra is designed by Sydney-based Indigenous designer, Nikita Ridgeway, and tells the stories of the Club’s Indigenous players.
