Souths Cares Ambassador and Rabbitohs legend, Nathan Merritt, recently hosted eleven students from Marrickville High School on a tour of the South Sydney training facilities in Redfern.
The students enjoyed a tour of the facilities which Merritt called his home for the majority of his NRL career, while also getting the chance to spend time with current Rabbitohs squad members.
“Apart from their interest in the Rabbitohs, the boys were keen to learn what it takes to become an NRL footballer,” said Nathan.
“In my role as a Souths Cares Ambassador, this is just one program we offer to schools as either a reward or learning experience for their students.”
The students, who are from the school’s Junior IM class, which is a class specifically for students with a mild-intellectual disability, were accompanied by teacher Natalie Amacha and School Learning Support Officer Rita Kazzi.
Natalie said the boys found it very exciting to be able to access the inner sanctum to see first-hand where their Rugby League heroes train.
“The students all realised that there is far more to football than just playing the weekly game,” said Natalie.
“They now have a greater understanding of the dedication, commitment and responsibility that is associated with the game.
“For my three Indigenous boys, seeing and speaking to Nathan Merritt and Greg Inglis, was very inspiring.
“They are still talking about how nice Nathan was to show them around and how positive it is to see him still working with the Club.”
Nathan commented that the students were well behaved and were a credit to their school.
