Rabbitohs CEO, Blake Solly, is very excited about returning to Dubbo for the second consecutive year for a home game.

“Last year’s game in Dubbo really showed everyone that Rugby League is the sport of choice in our regional centres, and when NRL clubs make the effort to take games to the bush it is a win for everyone,” Mr Solly said.

“We played the Charity Shield against the Dragons in Mudgee last weekend in front of a bumper crowd and we had a fantastic turnout in Cairns for our first pre-season game a fortnight ago. We played in front of almost 11,000 people at Apex Oval last year and we think this year’s attendance will be even greater when we take on the Canberra Raiders.  Like us, the Raiders are great supporters of Rugby League in the regions and it is fitting that they are our opponents in Dubbo.

“We’ll also be out and about in the community of Dubbo and the surrounding regions again this year, joining with Dubbo Regional Council and Souths Cares to do so, and we’re looking to forward to growing our connection with the people of western New South Wales again in May.

“Players such as Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Alex Johnston, Jai Arrow and our captain Cameron Murray are set to come up against the likes of Jack Wighton, Jarrod Croker, Joseph Tapine and Josh Papalii at Apex Oval. It will be a cracking game!

“We encourage everyone to pre-purchase tickets early or a Rabbitohs Central West Membership to make sure you get into Apex Oval as it will be a popular event again this year.

“We want to thank the people of Dubbo and the surrounding regions for their support in 2021 and we hope to see you all out at Apex Oval again this May for what should be a fantastic day at the footy!”

Dubbo Regional Council Mayor, Mathew Dickerson, said: “Dubbo Regional Council is proud to partner with the NSW Government and South Sydney Rabbitohs to bring the bunnies back to the bush this May.

“The investment into this extremely popular event is returned not only economically but there have been some incredible social and cultural benefits felt right across the region and we are looking forward to that level of engagement again this year.”

Member for the Dubbo electorate and Chair of the NSW Government’s NRL Regional Taskforce Dugald Saunders said the return of the 2021 grand-finalists was a coup for the city.

“Last year was a sell-out event, as Apex Oval hosted a preview of the NRL Grand Final,” Mr Saunders said.

“The city was sold out as well, which was fantastic for accommodation and other businesses in the region after a challenging couple of years!

“This year, under eased COVID restrictions, even more people will have the opportunity to watch their NRL heroes in action! I’m urging everyone to catch footy fever and paint the town red and green for another Festival of Footy!”
