Souths Cares followed up last year’s successful launch of their NAIDOC Festival with another well received and organised NAIDOC celebration at Heffron Park on Wednesday.
Hundreds of people from Maroubra and surrounding communities united at the future home of your Rabbitohs, Heffron Park, to partake in this year’s NAIDOC celebrations under the theme of Songlines: The living narrative of our nation.
“There are so many people here – we’re really lucky,” said General Manager of Souths Cares Brock Schaefer.
“It’s been a wonderful morning so far. This community is part of the Rabbitohs, we are part of it. It’s just been fantastic.”
Festivities began with a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony before exhibitions of traditional song and dance.
The Rabbitohs squad were on hand to help with the event and engage fully with the community and our traditional heritage.
Proud Yuin & Bundjalung man Cody Walker enjoyed the opportunity to showcase his culture and people to the large crowd at Heffron Park.
“To me it’s about celebrating our great culture and what wonderful things our great people have done not only in sporting but everyday life,” said Walker.
“It’s a wonderful event that Souths Cares put on and it’s great to see the turnout that’s been involved today.”
The day was made possible through the assistance of Multicultural NSW, Randwick City Council, the Department Of Prime Minister & Cabinet, the Commonwealth Bank, the NRL and Father O’Reilly’s Youth Off The Street.
“We’re really lucky to have so many different supporters putting on such a great day,” said Brock Schaefer.
