A shift to fullback didn’t seem likely for Cody Walker at the beginning of 2016, but that’s exactly where the live-wire playmaker now finds himself.
After an electric performance against the Dragons in Round 11 in the custodian role – picking up a brilliant solo try in the process – Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire officially picked Walker in the number one jersey for the first time, for this week’s trip to Perth to take on the Titans.
“I enjoyed it very much,” admitted Walker of the shift.
“(I’m) obviously playing a different position, but anywhere in the team that Madge wants me to play, I’ll put my hand up and have a go.
“I only ever played fullback when I was 15-16 (years old), but Madge tossed up the idea and I jumped at it.
“I’ll play anywhere in this team if Madge wants me to.
“You don’t sort of notice it when you’re playing five-eighth – how much work the fullback actually does, telling players where to go.”
An electric playmaker, Walker started the 2016 season at five-eighth, helping to steer the men in Red and Green to victory against the Roosters and Knights.
