Souths Cares is celebrating the success of Aleyah Miles, a participant in the Barranggirra Program who has recently completed her first School-Based Traineeship and is on track to complete a second School-Based Traineeship next year whilst also studying for her HSC.

Aleyah commenced a Certificate 2 in Zoo Keeping with Taronga Zoo in January, building upon her passion of caring for animals. The School-Based Traineeship with Taronga Zoo provided Aleyah with great opportunities to develop her knowledge and experience in Zoo Keeping at Sydney’s picturesque Harbourside Zoo. She successfully completed her training in September.

Not content with just one School-Based Traineeship, Aleyah also enrolled in a Cert 2 in Retail which includes a work placement at Westfield Shopping Centre in the CBD, where she works in a Concierge role amongst the hustle and bustle of Pitt Street Mall.

Aleyah was referred to Souths Cares Barranggirra Program in July and has embraced the mentoring support which has focused on balancing her work, training and school commitments as well as developing other aspirations and personal goals.

Robyn Murphy, Barranggirra Mentor explained working with Aleyah has been a great privilege.

Robyn Murphy, Employment and Training Mentor

I am extremely proud of Aleyah and how she has managed to overcome some hurdles in her own way. Aleyah is a very intelligent, polite and a strong Aboriginal young lady who is determined to set a great example for her peers and community and make her family proud.

Aleyah will continue to be supported by Souths Cares Barranggirra Program as she works towards completing her School-Based Traineeship in Retail and obtaining her HSC at Alexandria Park Community School in 2024. She is also diligently saving money with plans to travel after school and obtain her Driver’s License before the end of this year.

Aleyah shared some advice for other young people considering a School-Based Traineeship.

“Juggling a Traineeship and schoolwork can be overwhelming at times, especially at the start. If you stick with it throughout the journey you will be rewarded at the end”, Aleyah said.

The Barranggirra Program is proudly supported by Training Services NSW.
