Last week the Souths Cares team were busy in the community, delivering free Holiday Clinics in Liverpool and Redfern and supporting Sydney Local Health District’s Aboriginal Youth Gala Day.

The week kicked off with the team heading to the Michael Wenden Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Liverpool to host the first of two Holiday Clinics. The event was well supported by the local community with over 80 children attending and enjoying the opportunity to develop their rugby league skills, participate in Aboriginal cultural weaving workshops and enjoy a BBQ lunch with their friends and their Souths Cares team.

Souths Cares Ambassador, Yileen Gordon explained it was great to see Souths Cares having a strong impact in South Western Sydney.

It was great to see some familiar faces from our Liverpool Opportunity Hub Program attending our Holiday Clinic. Each time we come out to Liverpool we see more and more students getting involved and we love having the opportunity to spend time with them during their school holidays.

On Wednesday the team attended Sydney Local Health District's Aboriginal Youth Gala Day in Camperdown. This was the second year the Gala Day has been hosted, with the purpose of the event to provide health promotion information, encourage healthy and active lifestyles and provide local families and children with a fun and free school holiday activity.

Souths Cares provided skills and drills clinics, as well as facilitated a variety of games and hosted Aboriginal cultural weaving workshops, with over 100 children and their families attending throughout the day.

Friday’s Holiday Clinic was hosted at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern, with a great turnout of over 120 children despite the less than ideal weather conditions in the morning.

There was plenty of rugby league talent on display at the Redfern Holiday Clinic, with participants impressing Souths Cares Ambassadors and former NRL players Yileen Gordon and Rhys Wesser who awarded prizes for MVP’s in each age group.

Stacey Bell is a mother of four children who attended the Redfern Clinic and explained the free Holiday Clinics are a great initiative to support the local community.

"It’s amazing that Souths Cares provide local kids within the community an opportunity to participate in a free holiday activity. My kids had a great time at the Clinic and enjoyed learning some new rugby league skills from the Souths Cares and NRL staff", Stacey said.

Throughout the week over 300 children and their families attended a Souths Cares clinic or event, highlighting the impact the charity is having in promoting healthy lifestyles and the benefits of physical activity.

Souths Cares Holiday Clinics are proudly supported through our partnership with Sydney Civil.
