Souths Cares had the pleasure of hosting Casey Butler a year 11 student from Liverpool Boys on a week work experience with the Rabbitohs Wellbeing team and the Liverpool Opportunity Hub.
Since 2022 Casey has been a participant of the Liverpool Opportunity Hub displaying an enthusiasm to learn about his culture and thriving as a leader at his school. That rewarded Casey an opportunity to come on a Leadership Camp which was held this year in January.
Mentees were so impressed with Casey’s attitude towards learning and treating his peers with respect that he was presented with an award which demonstrated the values of being a good leader.
Through the week Casey attended school workshops with John Edmondson, James Busby, Good Samaritan, Miller Technology and Holsworthy High.
Casey was even lucky enough to take part in a Rabbitohs Wellbeing session with Eaglevale High Schools.
Casey Butler''As a proud Eora and Whadjuk young man, I’m grateful for Souths Cares’ support in guiding young fellas into adulthood. I appreciate everyone I have met and enjoyed seeing their work with young people especially visiting schools with Rhys. It shoed me the importance of teaching culture.’’
Currently Casey is completing a 2-year school-based traineeship in early childhood studies which he studies at the Liverpool Tafe.
However last week working closely with Souths Cares Mentor Rhys, Casey now has a passion to work with young people and maybe one day the chance to work with Souths Cares.

Rhys Wesser‘’Mentoring Casey over the last 2 years I have seen him grow into a leader, and one who cares for his culture and his community. Our team does their best to empower young people to be leaders and strive to reach their full potential.’’
From Casey’s early days with the Liverpool Opportunity Hub to stepping up as a role model at school and beyond, he’s shown nothing but passion for his culture and community. It’s been awesome to see him find his groove working with young people and no doubt Casey’s got a big future ahead. We look forward to seeing where his journey takes him next.
