In July 2024, Alkirah Quinlin commenced the Deadly Youth Mentoring Program, seeking support at a pivotal moment in her life. At a crossroads, Alkirah was determined to regain her direction and build a brighter future, and with the support of her mentor, Daisy Gordon, she’s been making strides towards her goals that she has established.

Soon after commencing the program, Alkirah worked alongside Daisy to set both short-term and long-term goals that would keep her on a positive and forward-moving path. Some of Alkirah’s key goals included gaining independence, obtaining her driver’s license, and completing her Year 10 certificate through EORA TAFE.

Daisy provided invaluable support throughout the process, offering transportation to TAFE and other services and guidance as Alkirah worked towards earning her driver's license. Alkirah’s dedication to the program was evident, and her hard work paid off when she successfully achieved her driver’s license goal.

"I feel amazing knowing I'm now legally able to drive. Things are falling into place, and I couldn't have done it without the incredible support of my mentor, Daisy, who has been with me every step of the way."

Alkirah faced numerous challenges in her pursuit of independence. With no steady income, she found it difficult to access the resources needed to improve her situation. Deciding traditional school wasn’t the right fit for her, leaving Year 10 in Term 3, Alkirah chose to pursue a different path by enrolling in EORA TAFE. However, having no no birth certificate or official ID prevented her from applying for jobs, accessing healthcare, or even securing basic services. Despite these setbacks, Alkirah’s determination eventually paid off, and with support from her Mentor, she was able to obtain the necessary documents to move forward.

Daisy Gordon, Deadly Youth Mentor

"Alkirah's resilience has truly shone through, despite the challenges she's faced. It's inspiring to see how far she's come in such a short time. Witnessing young people like Alkirah gain independence and take charge of their futures is incredibly rewarding."

Looking ahead, Alkirah plans to save for a second-hand car, continue her studies at TAFE, and work towards further education and career development.

With the continued support of the Deadly Youth Mentoring Program, Alkirah is well on her way to building the future she’s envisioned. The Deadly Youth Mentoring Program, proudly supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency, remains committed to support Alkirah as she works towards achieving her future goals.
