Souths Cares is celebrating the success of four of the Liverpool Opportunity Hub’s HSC graduates who have recently completed their first semester of University and are building the foundations for successful careers in their chosen fields.

Alexis Griffin, Charlize Natividad, Miranda Grove and Victoria Hanshaw all attended Good Samaritan Catholic College and joined the Liverpool Opportunity Hub program in 2021 whilst they were in Year 10. Over the past three years, they have been strongly engaged with the Liverpool Opportunity Hub; attending industry visits, school holiday activities, leadership and cultural camps, group excursions and in-school workshops.

With the support of their teachers, families and Opportunity Hub mentors the girls achieved great results in their senior high school years and grew into leadership roles within their school and communities. All four graduated with their HSC last year and were offered admission into University in 2024.

Alexis is studying a Bachelor of Law and Science at Western Sydney University and chose her degree as she is passionate about empowering Aboriginal voices and creating better outcomes for Aboriginal people within the legal system. She aspires to work as a criminal lawyer or within family law after completing her degree.

Alexis shared some advice for other high school students thinking about a University degree.

It’s important you believe in yourself and not let your peers get in the way of opportunities to succeed. You’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish when you get of your comfort zone.

Charlize is studying a Bachelor of Secondary Teaching (History and Law) at Notre Dame University. After completing her degree, Charlize wants to work within the Catholic education system and create a supportive learning environment where Aboriginal students can be proud of their culture and thrive in their high school education.

Miranda is studying a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Sydney, is living on campus and enjoying the University lifestyle. She chose her degree as she is eager to support Aboriginal youth become the next generation of leaders and would love to work as a psychologist and own her own business in the future. Miranda takes inspiration from her Nan, who is a life-long learner and recently obtained her PhD.

Victoria is studying a Bachelor of Secondary Teaching (Health and Physical Education) at the University of Sydney. Victoria has a passion for Gymnastics and enjoys coaching the sport. After completing her degree, Victoria hopes to gain a teaching role in the Liverpool area and give back to her community.

Rhys Wesser, Careers and Education Pathways Advisor for the Liverpool Opportunity Hub paid tribute to the girl’s commitment to their education and the Opportunity Hub program.

"Throughout their time at school Alexis, Charlize, Miranda and Victoria were outstanding students and they embraced every opportunity offered to them through the Liverpool Opportunity Hub. Their hard work has continued after school and they are all on a great trajectories – I couldn’t be any prouder of them", Rhys said.

All of the Opportunity Hub’s HSC graduates from 2023 will continue to be supported until the end of this year as they progress through their education, training and employment pathways.
