South Sydney’s SG Ball Cup under 19s men’s team have maintained their spot at the top of the competition ladder one-third of the way through the regular season with a 40-22 win at Kirkham Oval in Camden.

Three tries to hooker Cody Hill set up the victory, with second-rower Lochlin Moses also chiming in with a double.

The Rabbitohs trailed six-nil early before five-eighth Taj Alvarez scored in the 11th minute of play.

Hill then scored a first-half-double with tries in the 17th and 23rd minutes, before the Magpies struck back with two tries of their own, leaving the scores level at 16-all at half time.

Moses’ tries came in the opening four minutes of the second half, before the Magpies scored to reduce the deficit to six points.

The Rabbitohs would go on to run away with the game with tries to fullback Yasin Kuscu and Hill, taking the scoreboard to 40-22 in favour of the men in red and green.

The Rabbitohs middle forwards set the platform for the win with Maddax Fui, Johannes Logan and Elijah Keung all dominating the middle third. Cody Hill was strong out of dummy half, with Taj Alvarez, Yasin Kuscu and Mark Nosa the best of the backs, Nosa adding six goals to the seven tries throughout the match.

In the earlier game, the South Sydney Rabbitohs Harold Matthews Cup under 17s boys’ team defeated the Western Suburbs Magpies 22 points to eight.

Charlie Bateup scored a double to help get the Rabbitohs their third win from three matches to start the season, lifting the team to first place on the ladder.

The Magpies opened the scoring after five minutes and it would take the Rabbitohs a further 23 minutes before they could strike back through back-rower Ziggy Lester.

Bateup scored in the second minute of the second half, then scoring his second try 15 minutes later to establish a handy lead for the boys in red and green.

Wests struck back shortly after, but the game was put beyond doubt six minutes from full time when try-scoring front-rower Anthony Mailangi scored, breaking the spirit of the Magpies to seal the victory.

In the forwards, the Rabbitohs’ best were Mailangi, back-rower Soane Naufahu and lock Keone Anitelea Tsioussis, with five-eighth Payton Tarau, fullback Darcy Feltham and centre Asher Pung excelling in the backline.
