Despite unpredictable holiday weather, the Souths Cares Junior Holiday Clinics carried on with plenty of fun and excitement! Held at Redfern Oval and Heffron Park, the two junior rugby league clinics gave kids an opportunity to develop not only their athletic skills but also their social and emotional well-being. These clinics have become a highly anticipated event on the school holiday calendar, offering a holistic experience for young participants.
One of the main highlights was the rugby league skills training. Led by our Souths Cares ambassadors and former Rabbitohs players Yileen Gordon and Rhys Wesser, the kids rotated through stations designed to improve key aspects of the game. They worked on everything from ball-handling and passing to speed and agility drills like shuttle runs and cone exercises. It was all about giving them hands-on experience to sharpen their skills.
Our Rabbitohs Wellbeing Coordinator, Erin Geddes, was thrilled with the turnout of over 130 kids. It was great to see so many kids from different backgrounds come together and have fun.
Rabbitohs Wellbeing Coordinator, Erin GeddesAnytime we can get kids outdoors, moving around, and interacting with each other face-to-face is a win. Plus, offering the clinic for free is a big help for parents too."
Beyond the physical activities, Souths Cares also offered craft and weaving sessions to give the kids a creative break. Under the guidance of our staff, they learned some basic weaving techniques and made colourful crafts to take home – a nice way to unwind and still learn something new.
And of course, no Souths Cares clinic would be complete without a celebration! The smell of sausages on the BBQ had everyone excited, and as the kids sat down to eat, you could see the friendships and bonds they’d built during the day. The laughter and stories they shared showed how much fun they’d had.
The Souths Cares Junior Holiday Clinics are about more than just sports—they're about helping kids grow, learn, and connect with their community. With the perfect mix of skill-building, teamwork, creativity, and fun, these clinics leave a lasting impression on everyone who attends.
