On Friday participants in the Nanga Mai Marri (Dream Big) and Liverpool Opportunity Hub programs attended the UNSW for a campus visit and workshops, hosted by the Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs.

The opportunity to check out the UNSW campus was a popular drawcard with over 20 students from Alexandria Park Community School, Casula High School, Goal College, Good Samaritan Catholic College, Holsworthy High School, James Busby High School, Marcellin College, South Sydney High School and Tempe High School attending.

The campus tour kicked off at the Nura Gili Centre - UNSW’s state-of-the-art teaching and learning facility that supports Indigenous students throughout their journey in tertiary education.

The Nura Gili team spoke about their roles within the University, alternative entry pathways to study at the University, education support available through the Centre and the Indigenous Pre-Programs which include a three week residential stay at UNSW to fast-track University admission.

Dayne Fallon is a Year 12 student at Goal College and explained the workshop with Nura Gili had a big impact on his future aspirations.

The Nura Gili team inspired me and made me excited to prepare for University whilst also embracing my culture. I loved the experience visiting UNSW.

The group was then provided with a VIP tour of the UNSW campus hosted by Indigenous Student Ambassadors, spending time exploring the Science department, Arts department, student accommodation and the University’s high quality sporting facilities.

Allistar Flanders, Mentor for the Nanga Mai Marri (Dream Big) Program stated the students loved the opportunity to get a taste of University life.

"The Nura Gili team showed us that there is great support for Indigenous students to embrace their culture whilst they pursue their education at UNSW. Our students had a great time and I believe many of them now have the aspiration for tertiary education after completing school", Allistar said.

The campus tour concluded with a delicious group lunch put on by the University before students were given gift bags with some learning resources and UNSW merchandise, including a popular Indigenous designed hoody.

Souths Cares thanks UNSW and Nura Gili for the wonderful hospitality throughout the campus tour and the ongoing support of our community programs.
