On Friday students from Souths Cares’ Liverpool Opportunity Hub and Nanga Mai Marri Programs attended an industry visit hosted by Sydney Civil to learn about career pathways in the construction industry.
Students from Alexandria Park Community School, Goal College, James Busby High School, Liverpool Boys High School, South Sydney High School and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic College were accompanied by Souths Cares Mentors to the construction site in the heart of Sydney CBD.
The George Street North Project is being managed by Sydney Civil and forms part of City of Sydney’s vision to make George Street fully pedestrianised between Circular Quay and Central Station.

The industry visit kicked off with a site induction and safety briefing from Hussein Mourad, Senior Project Manager with Sydney Civil. The group were then given a guided tour of the project which includes traffic control, excavation works, upgrades to stormwater drainage, granite tiling and the installation of new trees and street furniture.
Ahmad Mourad, Contracts Manager for Sydney CivilOur partnership with Souths Cares is built on shared values – opportunity, community, and creating positive pathways for young people. Together, we’re showing that there’s a place in this industry for everyone. It’s more than just a site visit – it’s about opening doors and inspiring confidence in the next generation.
After the site tour, students listened to an engaging panel discussion with four members of the Sydney Civil team who represented diverse professions including Project Management, Media and Communications, Safety Operations and Community Relations.
The panel shared their own experiences working within the construction industry and valuable insights into building a successful and rewarding career. Hussein Mourad’s personal journey resonated strongly with the students – commencing as a Labourer after finishing school, taking every opportunity to learn new skills and working his way up to a Senior Project Manager.
Rhys Wesser, Careers and Education Pathways AdvisorOur student’s loved the opportunity to visit a vibrant construction site in the middle of the city and learn about what a career in the industry entails. A big thank you to the Sydney Civil team for hosting us and for being a great partner of Souths Cares.
Following the panel discussion, Souths Cares students joined the Sydney Civil team for lunch, which provided a wonderful opportunity for informal networking and learning more about day-to-day life in the construction industry.
