2018
For the first time, the Club issued a special jersey for Women of League round, which was similar in design to our home jersey except that the red bands were changed to pink. The Women in League jersey replicated the jersey worn by the Rabbitohs’ NSW Women’s Premiership team that season.
2019
In 2019, the Rabbitohs produced a similar Women in League jersey to that which they wore in 2019, featuring the pink hoops in lieu of the traditional red hoops, designed to replicate the jersey worn by the Club’s NSW Women’s Premiership side.
2021
In 2021, for the third year running, the Rabbitohs men’s team paid tribute to the Club’s Women’s team by wearing the same jersey in the NRL competition as the Women’s team did in their respective competition, featuring the pink and green hoops.
2022
For four years straight, the Rabbitohs men’s team wore the pink and green hoops during Women in League round, replicating the jersey worn by the Club’s NSW Premiership team.
2023
In 2023, the Rabbitohs moved away from the pink and green hooped jersey, instead paying tribute to one of the trailblazers of the women’s game, Maggie Moloney.
Maggie Moloney was Australiaʼs - and the worldʼs - first female Rugby League star. Our own Dally Messenger.
In 1921 Sydney, she was front-page news. She played on the wing for the Metropolitan Blues, known for her ʻremarkable paceʼ and ʻsound knowledge of the science of the game.ʼ
She scored four tries in her first game. It was described as thus: ʻone was a regular beauty as she had to first shake off the forward, then outpace her opponent, and finally swerve past the fullback. She did it like a champion.ʼ
The crowd had learnt her first name and ʻ“Maggie” was cheered all round the enclosure throughout the second half of the match.
The Sun dubbed her as the first star of the womenʼs game, its highest point scorer and most exhilarating favourite with the crowds - much like Messenger.
- Thank you to Katherine Haines for the information on Maggie Moloney.
